Where did the butterfly symbols emoji come from?

The butterfly is mostly seen to have a spiritual significance across the board. It has seen its origin from the ancient Celts, to the native indigenous Americans. In today’s world, it still holds meaning in western culture and China.

The ancients saw butterflies as the opposite of a worm, which essentially meant they saw their souls in them. Expanding on that concept, they believed, it is one’s inclination toward light and growth, leaving behind days of darkness.

The Mesoamericans saw the metamorphosis of butterflies as a symbol of rebirth. This was commonly believed to be true for martyrs in battle, who would then awaken in another dimension as birds, and hummingbirds forever. Similarly, the native Americans also saw hope, the possibility of a makeover that ultimately brought hope, optimism, and zest into one’s life. The Celtic mythology and African culture interpret butterflies in much the same way.

Though spirituality and religiosity are two different concepts, they both appear to be mostly the same given their common grounds of awareness, connection, and mindfulness. Hence, the butterfly emoji’s spirituality also partly arises from the religious concept of the Bible. In Christianity, there is a mention of butterflies in the Bible creating a relationship between the rebirth of Jesus Christ, and the transformation of a butterfly.

In the modern world, the western culture sees the feeling of being light in butterflies, and China sees happiness and pleasure in them.

However, all in all, the symbol mainly comes from the butterfly’s delicate beauty showcasing positive energy, optimism, love, rehabilitation, new beginnings, and freedom from hardships.
